Baremetal Infrastructure Slicing

Cloud Native RAN / O-RAN requires small K8s cluster to be deployed for vIrtual Distribution Unit (uDU) and virtual Control Unit (vCU) which implies that hardware infrastructure should be used efficiently due to limitation of space , energy and cooling requirements. Generally x86 compute servers are being used for these deployments but server size could be large and under utilised because of requirements of maintaining HA quorum for the application on different servers. We can slice the x86 servers by creating VMs in it and presenting those VMs as Baremetal server by using "host-passthrough" CPU model , dedicating I/O and qemu emulator threads and attaching SRIOV VFs or passing the NICs to the VM using PCI-Passthrough model. These VMs then can be used as Baremetal k8s worker nodes.
