This talk introduces the OpenStreetMap "Americana" project\, which aims t
o build an American map style\, complete with the features that North Ame
rican users expect to see on their maps. \n\nWe'll explore the technique
s involved in rendering highway shields and the challenges involved in re

f the American highway system. On the implementation side\, we'll show h
ow we're implementing an American style on a vector-tile software stack u

estrian infrastructure around the world and how it differs between cities
and countries. In some 2021 talks\, I looked at this closely across 5 ci
ties and compared the quality of OpenStreetMap data with the reality on t
he ground.\n\nIn this talk I'd like to walk through (pun-intended) the va
rious ways to collect pedestrian relevant data\, add it to OpenStreetMap\
, and then explore some of the ways it can be used on the other side. Som
e of the methods and tools I intend to cover include Mapillary\, GoMap\,
Vespucci\, and Street Complete. I'd also like to show what the output of
this data looks like in various places such as the Daylight Map Distribut
 ion\, Meta's map surfaces\, OSMAnd\, Mapbox\, and elsewhere.\n\nI'd like
to finish with a look at some of the ways pedestrians use maps currently
and how that might change in the future.

Mapping from satellite imagery in highly populated areas can be very chal
lenging when dense buildings and trees occlude the surface. Device locati
on signals can provide evidence about the existence of roads in these sc
enarios. Grab\, the leading superapp for deliveries\, mobility and financ
ial services in Southeast Asia\, collects and processes GPS signals from
their network of drivers. These signals are anonymized and averaged to pr
oduce vector data after some machine learning inference and centerline ex
traction. Based on our collaboration with Grab\, we present a framework o
n conflating this data against OSM roads. As a result we identified 240\,
000 kms of new roads in 62 cities where image-based ML models have diffic
ulty due to occlusion. The outputs are being made public through the Dayl
 ight Release.

Distribution of OpenStreetMap is now available on AWS as a public dataset
with complete geometries and expanded metadata in an Athena compatible f
ormat. All one needs is beginner knowledge of SQL to get started.\n\nWant
to know how many meters of primary highway are in OSM? This question is
 now a 3 line query: “SELECT sum(linear_meters) FROM osm_features WHERE t
ags[‘highway’] = ‘primary’”\n\nWe can then limit this to the past year\,
group by States or Countries using the geometries\, or even search for on
ly roads from changesets with an Amazon Data Team hashtag to get the tota
l length of driveways edited by Amazon last year. It has never been this
simple before\, and the possibilities are endless.\n\nAs a public dataset

ually any question about OSM without having to run their own infrastructu

insights into how urban movement occurs. What roads experience greater co
ngestion? How does a new off ramp impact traffic volumes on local roads?
Evaluating the impact of road features can often require advance planning
and limited exactitude.\n\nMapbox Movement is a dataset that aggregates
anonymized telemetry from devices running Mapbox technology and assigns m
ovement scores to geographic zones. We have just released a pilot that ag
gregates movement scores to OSM road segments\, unlocking high fidelity t
raffic measurements covering virtually all major roadways in US urban are
as.\n\nWe will review how we have matched activity indices to OSM and exp
lore the application of this aligned data set for transportation planning

vity indices can enable granular evaluation of traffic volumes\, such as
typical traffic volumes by hour\, day of week\, or time of year.

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Immaculata Mwanja\, William Evans\n\nAt least 70% of
residents in Dar es Salaam live in informal settlements with no access t
o their land rights. With the rapid urbanization going on in the city\, i
t shows that this problem will get worse in the years ahead. The scale of
the problem is huge (over 1 billion people do not have land rights)\, no
t only in Tanzania but also in the world at large.\n\nThe cost of surveyi
ng plots and providing title deeds is prohibitive using conventional meth
 ods\, but using community mapping\, OSM\, cheap dual-frequency sensors\,
drones\, or a simple phone\, it is possible. Our solution is simple: comm
unity cadastres. Working with small communities (100-200 people) and usin
 g low-cost\, high-accuracy\, dual-frequency RTKs\, we can create incredib
ly precise maps that lead to title deeds.\n\nI will share my views on how

OSM are most often attributed to improper tag combinations or diverse map
ping practices from people around the world. To spot map errors\, a group

community \n\nWith countless error detection tools available today we oft

tool with the same coding schema with a synthesis of the similarity and d

rovides a key source for OSM improvements in the region (over 226\,000 km

ion\, as powerful as it is\, usually suffers from patchy coverage and a l

for us was that off-the-shelf hardware and collection tools are just not
good enough to solve the problem.\n\nThis talk will cover how Grab Geo en

validity even mean? Are there too low\, too small\, or too large building

to analyze map quality for OSM globally\, in August 2021 (https://www.tom
 tom.com/blog/maps/tomtom-openstreetmaps-mapmetrics-map-editing/).\n\nThe
system uses GPS traces to see where people go\, and route against those t
races to see if routing engines follow what people actually do. Where the
y agree\, we show green areas. Where they disagree\, we show red areas.\n
\nMany things can make a routing engine disagree with what someone drives
 . Perhaps roads are missing\, attributed incorrectly\, misaligned\, one w
ay streets are wrong and so on. MapMetrics makes no distinction but does
say "here be dragons" and let mappers investigate the particular issues.\

swer the above question\, we are building a tool that works with OSM whic
h selects within a polygon the road network that matches a given field\,
then aggregates the length of that road network.\n\nBenefits:\nUnderstand
ing road network length by type within a given area gives us a metric to
understand street ‘supply.’ We can begin to quantify & compare how much o
f a region is made up of different types of roads. Some roads have good a
ssociations for sustainable mobility (transit lanes)– other road types ha
ve poor associations for sustainable mobility (highways). By being able t
o classify the amount of different types of roads in a variety of areas w
e can compare road supply type in different cities and neighborhoods. The
n\, by pairing it with other social metrics we may identify associations
 that impact supply. \n

account the connectivity of the road network. First\, we generate a road
network graph in both sources based on bifurcation points. Second\, we c
arry out node and edge matching between the graphs. This is followed by t
he merging stage where graph edges with matching end nodes get conflated.
Newly added roads are connected with the graph based on node and edge ma
tching. We carry out experiments on conflating open source footway datase

s up to 16x map feature improvements per city with geometrically accurate
