Mhlasakululeka Mvubu is a Data Scientist at Lulalend, one of the leading Fin-tech Companies in South Africa and in the African continent. The company provides funding to businesses. Aspiring applicants use an online platform that also enables decision making real-time. Mvubu is a member of the team comprising deep learning and artificial intelligence experts that maintain the systems supporting Lulalend’s work.

He is also a former Data Scientist Software Engineer at African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Data Science Group (DSG) under Dr Bubacarr Bah (German Research Chair of Mathematics with specialisation in Data Science at AIMS South Africa). He received his second Masters of Science (M.Sc) degree (2019) in Mathematics (specialisation: Financial Mathematics,
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) at Stellenbosch University (SU), supervised by Prof Ronnie Becker (Senior Resident Researcher at AIMS) and Dr Bubacarr Bah. His M.Sc research was on understanding the hidden patterns of financial markets movement using Deep Learning (DL). For some of

his M.Sc work he has received an Honourable Mention Kambule Masters Award in Research Excellence and Impact in African Artificial Intelligence due to his M.Sc thesis paper “An Error Correction Neural Network for Stock Market Prediction” for its contributions which are relevant to a “plethora of other
applications” within the AI community.

He also obtained his first M.Sc degree (2016) in Mathematics under AIMS Structure masters program in collaboration with the University of Western Cape were his thesis focuses on Financial Mathematics and Data Science. He holds a B.Sc Honours degree in Astrophysics and Space Science (2015) at the University of
Cape Town (UCT) under National Astrophysics and Space Science Program (NASSP) were he worked on project involves: estimation of number of pulsars in the Milky Way Galaxy that could be detected with the MeerKAT and B.Sc undergraduate degree (2013) in Applied Mathematics and Physics at University
of Fort Hare (UFH). For the (2013-2015) academic years, he was a scholarship holder for the coveted South African Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project.
