Session

So You Want to Be a Rockstar in Tech?

No matter what career path you choose in tech, your success is going to come down to a lot of hard work, a bit of luck, and a series of good life choices. In this presentation, you’ll learn how to make better decisions to ensure your long-term career success in IT.

We’ll do this by playing “The Game of Life” as an interactive social game, using a virtual avatar. Our goal will be to help our avatar achieve their dream career filled with fame, fortune, and love. As a group, we’ll choose actions that will send our avatar down various possible life paths that will either lead to career success or epic failure — just like The Sims or a Choose Your Own Adventure book.

Through this fun and interactive experience, you will learn a series of key lessons that will increase your likelihood of success in the real “game of life”. Lessons that I had to learn “the hard way” over 25+ years of trial and error on my journey to a successful career in tech — while attempting to become a professional rock musician.

Over my career, I've taught over 400,000 software developers and IT professionals.

I've delivered over 100 keynotes, presentations, and workshops on every continent in the world (including Antarctica).

I've spoken at Microsoft Ignite, NDC, Devoxx, CodeMash, Techorama, DevSum, KCDC, VS Live, IT/Dev Connections, and more.

I'm also the president of Serenze Global, a co-organizer of AntarctiConf, and a member of the speaker-selection committee for KCDC.
