The 5th Annual All Day DevOps is on November 12, 2020. Starting at 9:00 AM GMT and continuing for 24 hours, there will be 6 simultaneous tracks, with each track containing a continuous series of 30-minute presentations, for a total of over 50+ hours of presentations. Attendance is free, available through streaming online services.

We love our marketing, consulting and sales teams. However, we have a strictly enforced "No Vendor" policy on speaker submissions. This includes companies providing technology tools, services and consulting. Submissions from vendors will not be considered and will immediately be rejected.


CONFERENCE TRACKS

In your submission, please specify which track you are applying for.

Submissions should include the most appropriate track, although the organizers reserve the right to move presentations into other tracks at their discretion. We are looking for DevOps practitioners who want to tell their story. Make sure you understand the speaker guidelines and read through the conference tracks before submitting your session.

There are 5 defined tracks:

  1. Modern Infrastructure
  2. DevSecOps and Automated Security
  3. CI/CD - Continuous Everything
  4. Cultural Transformation
  5. SRE - Site Reliability Engineering
  6. Government

There will be 145 general sessions and 5 keynotes.

Track 1: Modern Infrastructure

In this track, we will be discussing novel architectures, approaches, and tools for building out software and services. Infrastructure today can be bare metal, cloud, containers, the full Kubernetes cloud-native ecosystem, or even serverless. How can you create, manage, and monitor them as code? What do configuration management, change management, and capacity planning look like in the cloud native era? Topics that would be a perfect fit for this track: 

  • Container Orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes, Nomad, etc)
  • Cloud Native architectures (CNCF tools, etc)
  • Application Centric Approaches (e.g. CDK, Chef Habitat, Terraform, etc)
  • Cloud (AWS, Google, Azure, etc)
  • Serverless (AWS Lambda, other cloud or on prem serverless frameworks, etc)
  • Microservices
  • Other Infrastructure as Code topics (yes, even for bare metal)

We are looking for practical and pragmatic talks that mix both theory and real-world examples. We would love case studies and a complete show-and-tell of infrastructures using these technologies/tools.

Track 2: DevSecOps & Automated Security

You have a well tuned development and delivery environment or you're in the process of building one. AppSec is a top business concern. You moved DevSecOps from Big Foot and UFOs to reality, you sold the dream to staff, and now it’s beginning to pay off. This track explores DevSecOps tools and techniques to build a successful automated security program. Sessions in this track might include:

  • DevSecOps Saved my Bacon
  • Strengthening Application Defenses
  • Security Tools in the CI/Delivery Pipeline
  • Security in the Supply Chain
  • Open Source Innovations

Not every technical person is an internal security marketing genius. We are looking for your proven techniques to resource and build a successful program. We are also looking for high-focused technical sessions on tools and technologies bring security value to the development pipeline. Particular emphasis on results, with  successful and common traps to avoid.

Track 3: CI/CD - Continuous Everything

Continuous Delivery is not magic, but it does take the right effort. The most successful practitioners have taken pragmatic steps to reduce cycle times, improve collaboration, and build quality in without burning people out. This track asks you to share your front line experiences of building CI/CD pipelines, aligning key stakeholders, and measuring the results. Remember, what’s now an everyday experience for you, is new and exciting to others pursuing that path.

Presentation titles in this track might include: 

  • From Zero to Hero in 6 Months
  • How I implemented a CD/CD Solution with Spit and Bailing Wire 
  • Getting Started with Continuous Delivery on AWS
  • We Thought We Were Doing Continuous Delivery Right, Until…
  • Automating Almost Everything with Open Source Applications
  • How Our “Build Quality In” Initiative Resulted in 93% Fewer Defects

Because “one size fits all” approaches frequently miss the mark, this track explores how to achieve continuous operations across both large-scale applications and small environments — however, the fundamentals will apply to every organization. Selection of talks will be rated on the clarity of the solutions, the practical applications that can be gleaned from the topic and the excitement of the story, itself.

Track 4: Cultural Transformation

Cultural transformation is one of the most important considerations when implementing a DevOps/DevSecOps strategy. In this track, we’ll hear from practitioners who have jumped through the politic hoops, worked through the roadblocks of legacy processes and have come out the other side to show the value of their DevOps initiatives. Speakers submitting to this track should be able to present their company story and list their top 3 difficulties in convincing the team or company to move into DevOps.

 Sessions in this track might include:

  • Implement DevOps in Large Enterprises
  • How to Lead a DevOps Team of 125
  • Get Started with DevOps in Government
  • Skill Shift: From Deep to Wide, Hard to Soft
  • The Trust Algorithm for DevSecOps

Track 5: SRE - Site Reliability Engineering

What happens when the best teams treat Operations as a software problem? Help others learn how your organization is creating ultra-scalable, highly reliable software systems. Help us learn more about how you balance the relentless delivery of new features and capabilities while ensuring happiness of your users. While SRE was created at Google over 15 years ago, they are not the only organization who has harnessed its success. It’s time to share your experiences and lessons learned with the All Day DevOps community.

Presentation titles in this track might include: 

  • Ansible for SRE teams 
  • Getting Started with Chaos Engineering
  • Stable and Accurate Health-Checking of Horizontally-Scaled Services
  • SRE on a Shoe-String: How Three People Changed a Little Corner of the World
  • Improving Site Reliability Across Multiple Regions: Lessons Learned at ABC Gaming
  • When it All Came Crashing Down: A Open Post-Mortem on our Biggest Site Failure


SPEAKER GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS

Sonatype, Inc. (the “Event Organizer”), the event sponsors and our team of community volunteers want to make it as simple and transparent as possible for you to participate in the conference. All sessions are presented and recorded virtually, over YouTube Live Stream. If your session is selected, here are the ground rules and a few legal considerations.

Something to Consider when Submitting

We are looking for practical, real world solutions. While presentations may mention tools and services in passing as part of an integrated solution, they may not contain pitches for those products or services. We realize everyone works for someone. The presentation may include one screen introducing the speaker and their affiliation with a company, but this should not include a veiled offer of a product or service. There should be no other visual company logo other than on the title slide, the speaker introduction slide and the closing slide.

Get Approval to Present Before Submitting

Get approval BEFORE submitting. We've had situations where submissions are accepted and then the presenter is blocked from participating because the company will not allow them to speak. This isn't just disappointing for you, it is for us, too.

Check with your legal department. Check with your marketing department. Check with your manager. Let them know you will be presenting live, online and the session will be recorded for viewing after your presentation. Get their approval before submitting.

Session Times

Sessions run 30 minutes each. We will start with the presenters in Australia and Asia for the first sessions, move to India and Europe for the next series of sessions, moving through North and South America, before returning to Australia and Asia for the closing. When submitting your presentation, please let us know your physical location (country and region) and your time zone.

After your presentation, you'll be moved over into the public All Day DevOps slack channel where you can have a live Q&A with your audience. We have found this to be so engaging, many speakers actually stay for hours afterward for the live interaction with their followers.

No Sales or Marketing Pitches 

We love our marketing and sales teams, however we request no presentations be built around any specific product or service. We strictly enforce our “No Vendors” policy.   This includes companies providing technology tools, services and consulting. Submissions from vendors will not be considered and will immediately be rejected.

Agreement to Record and Distribute the Session

If your presentation is selected, you agree we may record your session. (More on this below under “An Obligatory Word from Our Lawyers.”) The sessions will be delivered over YouTube Live Stream. Upon conclusion of the sessions, they will be automatically saved on YouTube. We will be promoting your session after the conference through creation of playlists and various social media promotions.

Presentation Deck and Your Profile

If your session is confirmed, you agree to send us your slide deck one week prior to the event, so we can prep them to go on SlideShare.net or into a publicly accessible drive. Yes, we realize you’ll be updating your presentation minutes before you go online to deliver it. That’s ok. Send us what you have a week prior so we’ve got the foundation of your presentation. If there are major changes, we can always replace the one published on SlideShare or in the drive.

A brief bio is included as part of your submission. We will also be asking for a large headshot if your submission is accepted, so you might as well start looking around for that now.

Online Sound Check Practice Session

This is a live, online conference, not a webinar. Your presentation will be going out globally to potentially over 30,000 people. We want to make sure your presentation goes off without a hitch.

If your session is selected, you’ll need to do a short practice session online with your track moderator one week prior to the event. This request comes from practical experience. It is critical in order to assure your connectivity and sound quality. It also gives the track moderator a chance to work through any issues or questions you might have regarding screen sharing your presentation, or any logistical problems you might have.

On the day of your presentation, you are expected to login to the online environment “Green Room” a 1/2 hour in advance to do a final check with the moderators. This was a life saver last year, where fully 25% of the speakers needed some kind of audio or video adjustment before going live.


WHAT SPEAKERS CAN EXPECT FROM US

It can be nerve wracking when presenting online. Our team of experienced hosts and moderators will work to make it so you can give your presentation with the least amount of concern over logistics. We want you to worry about delivering your content, and we’ll take care of the rest.

The Presentation Platform

The presentation platform for this event is YouTube Live Stream. We have  found this to be a solid platform, making it easy to access, record and save each presentation. If you haven’t used YouTube Live Stream before, we’ve got practice sessions setup a week before the conference to give you some hands-on experience.

Promotion of the Event

We’re good at this, if I do say so. We’ve got a marketing campaign setup to help promote the conference and your session starting a month and a half before the event. This will include your name, your presentation and anything else we can fit that will encourage people to attend your session. We’ll start with a concentrated opt-in email campaign and supplement it with LinkedIn and Facebook keyword advertising for the duration of the promotion. We want you to get exposure on a global scale for your session.

Support for Your Presentation

You won’t be left alone to “sink or swim” during your presentation. Your track hosts and moderators will be there to help with any technology glitches and to support you with audience involvement and participation.

Live Interaction with Your Audience

Speaking of audience involvement and participation, Chris Corriere has setup multiple #slack channels so you can exchange messages with your audience during your session, as well as afterward to answer any questions that might have come up.

By submitting materials and requesting a speaking slot, you:

  • (a) agree that your participation in the conference is not going to make your boss mad and that you have all necessary permissions to participate;
  • (b) that the Event Organizer will be able to use, re-use, publish and republish your presentation materials and any and all photographic, digital, audio, video and other images of you with respect to your presentation at the conference, whether in its entirety or as edited or otherwise modified by the Event Organizer, for any other purpose whatsoever, including inclusion in book format; and
  • (c) authorize the Event Organizer to use your presentation materials, in whole and in part, and your name, voice, actions, appearance and likeness in connection with any and all promotional, advertising and marketing activities with respect to the conference and your presentation, all without compensation; and
  • (d) release and relinquish any right that you may have to examine or approve the completed product or products or the advertising copy or printed matter that may be used or developed in conjunction with such presentation materials, images or your name, voice, actions, appearance and likeness, or the use to which such presentation materials, images or your name, voice, actions, appearance and likeness may be applied.
