About Humane Canada’s One Health/One Welfare Conference

Date: November 25-26, 2025, at the Delta Hotel, Ottawa

Presenting Humane Canada’s One Health/One Welfare Conference – the first national conference to explore the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health and well-being and highlighting the importance of taking a holistic approach to increasing global challenges.

What is One Health / One Welfare?

One Health is an integrated approach aimed at balancing and optimizing the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. It involves multiple sectors and disciplines to anticipate, prevent, detect, and control diseases that spread between animals and humans, address antimicrobial resistance (AMR), ensure food safety, and prevent environment-related health threats.

One Welfare further recognizes that animal welfare, biodiversity and the environment are intertwined with human well-being and community resilience. It is a framework that acknowledges the many interconnections between human health and well-being, animal welfare, and the integrity of their physical and social environments, with an understanding that the well-being of one is connected to, and impacted by, the well-being of others. One Welfare expands beyond physical health to involve ethics, economics, and politics and encourages an interdisciplinary frame when examining human, animal, environmental and societal welfare.

By bringing together experts from various fields, sectors, and communities, this conference will cultivate collaboration, ignite new conversations and foster innovation in addressing these complex issues. It aims to increase the understanding, recognition, and use of this approach with decisionmakers and policy-makers in Canada and internationally.

The conference will feature keynote speakers and panel discussions that delve into topics such as Environmental Threats, Health Impacts, Community and Social Safety Nets, Local and Global Integration and Reconciliation Within a One Health/One Welfare framework.
