With Nix, you don't even have to imagine that you can build the digital commons from scratch. One change to the bootstrap, and you'll rebuild the world. But, it's your world, and you can see every leaf and branch of the Great Tree in front of you.
In a world full of unwanted app updates and SaaS providers who want your personal information, being able to self host one of the largest collections of software on the planet in a stable way across updates with NixOS has the potential to change the game for anyone who's tired of the slow decline of cloud services. With a single line of code, you can enable replacements for services as varied as Google Photos or Slack, and deploy them repeatably across as many machines as you want.
Even if you don't run NixOS, building software with Nix allows you to deploy it across different Linux distributions and architectures. No longer do you have to build entire distributions into Docker images or flatpaks that bitrot - Nix can do that too, and it can do it over and over again. Set up a development shell to provide friends or coworkers access to dev environments, and build your software the same way every time, with upwards of 120,000 packages you can leverage.
Access to services and software everywhere: that's Nix. We've come a long way since Eelco Dolstra's 2006 PhD thesis. Welcome to Nix Vegas, where we want to rebuild the world.
We are looking for speakers who want to discuss all things Nix and NixOS at Nix Vegas @ DEF CON 33, in presentations lasting 30 minutes to an hour.
Ideas (this list is not exhaustive, surprise us):
FAQ
Note that a DEF CON 33 badge is required to present. As a DEF CON Community, we will not provide speaker badges for giving talks. However, the SoCal NixOS User Group will be recording your talks, and working with DEF CON ops to get them onto the DEF CON Media Server afterwards (with your slides, if you later upload them to your session on Sessionize).
Also note that we will be doing lightning talks! If you have an idea that doesn't fit into a 30 minute presentation but is more like 10-15 minutes, we can either play it by ear and you can sign up during the convention, or you can pick the 15 minute time option when submitting your talk. Ultimately, we want you to be able to present in the format that feels most comfortable for you.
Is a real name required? No, Sessionize just requires it in their submission form. You can override it with the screen name field if you so choose. Evaluation of submitted talks will be blind to either using Sessionize's anonymous mode.
