Leaders as Learners: Building the Village Our Children Need

As the priority for student SEL has surged globally, so has an appreciation for the critical role of adult SEL competence and capacity. When adults and students alike have meaningful opportunities to learn and develop social and emotional competence within supportive, inclusive environments, adults and students both benefit. These types of opportunities and learning environments require a focus on essential SEL skills, relationships, and ensuring every individual feels known, valued and a sense of belonging. 

The 2023 SEL Exchange will elevate these key messages:

SEL is grounded in science. The growing body of scientific studies and SEL-based research creates a strong foundation for evidence-based programs, strategies, resources, and environments that promote SEL competence. 

To promote students’ social and emotional competence, we must also prioritize the social and emotional competence and capacity of adults. Adults influence the social and emotional development of children. The more we develop our own social and emotional skills and strategies, the better we can support young people through their SEL experiences.
