Beer City Code is an annual software development conference held in Grand Rapids, MI, also known as Beer City, USA. Software creators of all shapes are invited, even those who don’t care for beer!

The main conference is Saturday, June 19, with optional day-long workshops held the day before, Friday, June 18. There is a diversity mixer Friday night and an after-party + brewery crawl on Saturday night.

The Beer City Code conference grew out of the success of its predecessor, Grand Rapids DevDay, but was renamed in 2017 to embrace its much more broad appeal outside the Grand Rapids area, and regularly attracts 400+ attendees.

What You Need to Know

A pre-conference day offering 6-hour workshops. Workshops should provide deep knowledge on the topic, with hands on learning, and enough content to fill 6-8 hours.

The day-long conference is on Saturday and we will be selecting as many quality 50 minute sessions as we can to fill the day. We are seeking diverse topics and speakers.

Call for Speakers closes on March 31 at 11:59 PM EST, but we’d REALLY appreciate it if you would get your submissions in earlier. Breakout sessions are 50 minutes total, workshops are 6 hours.

What You Get

All speakers receive complimentary admission to the entire event (Friday and Saturday) and a thank-you gift, but are required to let organizers know which Friday workshop they'd like to attend. Speakers are admitted to a workshop only when the presenter approves and only after paying attendees are given the chance to fill the session.

Speakers are invited to the diversity mixer on Friday and the after party on Saturday.

Hotels are covered for Friday night for workshop speakers, but due to budget constraints, other travel expenses are not covered.

Selected speakers will be notified by email as soon as possible after March 31.

General Submission Guidelines

We look for the best content for software developers above all else - namely, any topics we think will be of interest to our attendees, regardless of who submits them. Sessions on all aspects of software creation (design, development, management, process, soft skills, etc) or any technology stack are very welcome!

Sessions that appear to be a sales pitch for a product or service will be given lower priority. Please review the code of conduct for guidance on any questionable content.

Please provide 6 to 8 hours of content for your workshop, and organize it in a way so both beginners and advanced students are able to get something out of it. Please let us know if you've given this workshop before, and what, if anything, attendees will be required to have with them--laptop (mac and/or pc?), software and tools, etc.

Blind Selection Process

We make our best effort to selected sessions through a blind process that removes any identifying information from the submission so that only the best sessions make it in. We do, however make an effort to have as diverse a set of speakers as possible, so please help us spread the word to everyone.
