The Lonestar Application Security Conference (LASCON) is an OWASP conference being held annually in Austin, TX for over 10 years. It is a gathering of 300+ web app developers, security engineers, mobile developers and information security professionals from across Texas, the US, and the world. LASCON is held in Texas where more Fortune 500 companies call home than any other state, and it is held in Austin which is the hub for startups in the state of Texas. At LASCON, leaders from across the US along with security architects and developers gather to share cutting-edge ideas, initiatives, and technology advancements.
This annual event includes 2 days of conference talks on Thursday and Friday. On the Wednesday evening prior, the conference team hosts our speaker appreciation dinner for all speakers at an off-site location. On Thursday morning, a keynote speaker is followed by four concurrent tracks of speakers for the remainder of the day. Not too late at the end of the first conference day, we have a sponsored happy hour at the conference location which is a great meet-and-greet for all speakers, attendees, and sponsors. Sponsors have been known to have additional after-hour events nearby after the happy hour. Friday continues the conference with a keynote and again later with four concurrent speaking tracks. LASCON ends with a closing ceremony with attendee prize giveaways and other conference activity celebrations.
The conference attendees cover a range from beginner to experienced technical, administrative, and managerial knowledge and are accepting a variety of speaking topics and methods from speakers with a wide-range of experience and abilities. The conference attendees love new ideas and new speakers, but they also enjoying seeing former speakers who want to speak and learn again at LASCON.
The conference center itself is large but not overly large such that our attendees are dwarfed by the location. The hallway-con is forever going, and speakers and sponsors can get to know the attendees well. (A speaker-only room is available for speakers to plan and work by themselves as needed.) One of the best aspects of LASCON is the ease of conversations in the conference center.
While a speaker can submit multiple potential sessions, the conference rarely accepts multiple presentations from an individual speaker.
All presentations are to be done in-person. We will not accept online presentations.
In the spirit of OWASP openness, LASCON pays to record all presentations and uploads them to a dedicated Youtube channel forever. Only under special circumstances and with prior agreement are presentations not made available to the public. Please document in your submission if you have or may have concerns on LASCON making the presentation available to the public after the conference is over.
Each session will be allowed 50 minutes entirely. Please plan for any Q&A into the time allotted. Room proctors will provide several warnings when approaching the time limit. If discussions continue after the time limit, please be prepared to adjourn to the hallway to continue with Q&A.
Topic Coverage: Almost anything related to information security - administrative, technical, career, auditing/controls, pentesting, etc. Please mention the level of knowledge required as some attendees are experts in the fields, while others are starting their career and exploring the field.
Required Information: Proposals must also include a biography and contact details of the speaker(s). Proposals will be evaluated on the merits of the abstract, blind to biography during evaluation, but we do need biographies for the program publication & marketing. If your talk is accepted, you will also be required to submit an OWASP Speaker Agreement (https://owasp.wufoo.com/forms/owasp-keynote-speaker-and-trainer-agreement/) which includes a code-of-conduct agreement.
Schedule/Etc.: Sessionize may be used for schedule and presentation to attendees. Please make sure your submitted information has an appropriate personal image (if desired) and biography to be shared with the attendees on both the Sessionize scheduling site and the LASCON program.
Equipment: For the day of presentations, typically the presentations are displayed on a screen and projector provided by the conference center. If you need other media, identify above. Speakers will be provided with a projector, a wireless lapel microphone and a screen for their presentation (screen size depends on the room). Speakers should bring any equipment they need to connect to projectors (i.e. Mini DisplayPort, VGA). The venue will not have connectors available for use.
It is also suggested that you reduce your dependency on the wi-fi internet connection that is provided at the conference center, although we have not had much problems with it in the past.
