The Story Our Halls Tell: Building Spaces For Student Living

Residence Halls are more than a place to reside for our students, for them they are their home. These students’ entire lives are shaped by their environment during the crucial formative years they spend with us in our halls. This presentation will examine the message that students receive from observing the facilities around them in their halls. These messages might be regarding the values of the institution, characteristics of the community who lives there, or the activities that the spaces are intended to be used for. This presentation will provide a research basis in describing how a resident hall environment affects the behaviors and beliefs of different constituent groups through analysis of the ‘story’ or anthology of messages that students take away from a space. Additionally, this presentation will provide the opportunity to work collaboratively with other participants to imagine and design concept residential life spaces that balance fiscal efficiency with co-curricular efficacy. A version of this presentation was given to campus leadership at the University of Missouri - S&T to help shape the Department of Student Success’ philosophy regarding student space design and maintenance.
