Helping fight COVID-19 using open source code
In this talk, we'll discuss how the open source community and GitHub have been working together to fight the impact COVID-19. During the pandemic, I moved back to India and helped start Karuna 2020, a nonprofit that distributed meals to thousands of migrant laborers and masks to frontline workers. My team and I ended up building an open source platform on top of GitHub Actions to track donations, volunteers, distributions, etc., and built a fully automated open source system to run the nonprofit.
In this session, participants will learn:
- How to use open source for good
- How to create a fully-automated pipeline using GitHub Actions, TypeScript and connect it to Airtable, Pupeteer, etc.
- How the open source community came together during Covid-19
- Open innovation and top Covid-19 tracking projects

Open source as a Startup
This talk is for everyone who's interested in open source + everyone who's interested in entrepreneurship/startups!
I reflect on journey -- from building an open edtech platform for K-12 students (Class Rebels), to an open source browser extension for people with dyslexia that became an accessibility technology company with several disabled-friendly products (Oswald Labs), to starting a Y Combinator-funded company in a completely different space (Pabio, furniture rental with interior design), and building and launching an open source project with 10k+ stars (Upptime).
In this session, participants will learn:
- How Upptime works using GitHub Actions, GitHub Issues, and GitHub Pages
- Open source monetization options like dual licensing
- Fundraising as an open source company
- Benefits of investing in open source as a startup
- Value and usefulness of open source software
