Annmarie McMahill is a Senior Research Scholar for the Center for Health and Safety Culture at Montana State University and the principal investigator for ParentingMontana.org. Annmarie’s leads efforts to foster innovation to address complex social challenges around health and safety. She holds a M.S. in Prevention Science and has over 25 years of experience working in the public sector. She began her professional career teaching science. After several years in the classroom, she chose to focus her energies on the at-risk youth population and developed a transitional living program for youth aging out of the foster care and juvenile justice systems in Wyoming. Seeing the need to strengthen the social ecology around youth she was serving directed her to the prevention field where she led community efforts addressing substance use, tobacco-free environments, child wellness, and chronic disease. Annmarie’s areas of interest continue to be focused on youth, as well as substance use prevention and comprehensive community development.

Applying an Intentional 5-Step Process to Grow the Social and Emotional Skills of Parents
This talk describes an innovative mixed methods evaluation of ParentingMontana.org’s intentional parenting process. Results indicated that parents improved their social skills, emotional competencies, communication, and parent-child relationships. Direct quotes from parents will be used to engage participants and bridge the fields of parenting education and social and emotional learning.
