Returning to Tech... Twice

There have been two times in my career where I stepped away from active development and into non-technical roles. Both times, I transitioned back into a technical role after several years. I'll share the invaluable lessons that I've learned from those non-technical experiences, as well as tips for successfully transitioning back into a technical job.

Learning Leadership: Practical strategies for developing leadership skills

Leadership skills aren't some mysterious "it" factor that some people have and some people don't. They are attainable by anyone who is willing to step outside of their comfort zone and purposefully seek out leadership experiences.

This talk will identify the habits and competencies that organizations look for when hiring and promoting new leaders. More importantly, it will give you practical strategies to identify and take advantage of self-driven experiences and opportunities to develop those professional behaviors.

Soft skills often feel nebulous, and when you receive feedback that one of your leadership skills is lacking, it can feel discouraging to try to pin down an actionable plan to help correct it. Even then, it is hard to track measurable improvement. In this session, we will identify competencies that are expected at each level and provide tools for developing them.

I speak from my own experience of the lessons I have learned as I moved from individual contributor to leader, as well as my experience in coaching others as a mentor, a tech lead, a team lead, a director of consultant development, and a software engineering manager.

Going Native: An intro for newcomers to mobile development

I started my career as a web developer, but after a recent job change I found myself managing a mobile development team and I needed to get up to speed quickly on the ins and outs of native development. In this session, we will cover:
- An intro to iOS development using SwiftUI / Swift
- An intro to Android development using Jetpack Compose / Kotlin
- Helpful tips and tools for developing native apps and tracking and improving their success

Machine Learning and Accessibility: Solving complex inclusivity problems while learning AI

How would you add descriptive alt text to hundreds of photos on your website at once? How would you add robust audio descriptions and transcripts to your videos? These are complex and important problems facing developers as they strive to increase the accessibility of their websites. However, these problems are manageable when you use machine learning tools that are available with a low learning curve. We will talk about the basics of machine learning, how to get started, and the positive impact that machine learning can have on the accessibility of a modern website.

Sustainable Accessibility: Integrating accessibility checks into your CI/CD pipeline

Accessibility is important, not only for your users but also to meet legal requirements for certain levels of compliance. Unfortunately, most companies lack developers and quality assurance analysts who are trained to produce and test accessible user interfaces to industry-standard levels. Furthermore, dev and qa testing for ADA compliance takes time, and can often be forgotten or de-prioritized by companies that have limited resources. In this talk I will discuss:
1. Why accessibility is important
2. The accessibility standards put forth by the ADA in WCAG 2.1
3. How we have leveraged automated accessibility testing tools into our CI/CD pipeline
4. The impact this integration has had on our ability to maintain website accessibility across multiple projects, even when developers have little to no accessibility training going in.
