Ben Harguth is Cardno International Development’s Senior Strategy and Business Innovation Lead. In his role, Ben works with a diverse, global team to leverage successes, lessons and learnings across projects and donors, to capitalize on innovative solutions for development challenges. Ben has led the development of Cardno’s strategy, ‘Digital Solutions for Development’ to leverage the use of technology in aid programming. Ben is currently based in Kigali, Rwanda. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and a Master of Public Policy from Central European University.

Mapping the Sustainable Development Goals to promote gender-responsive technology

Inclusive technology can only be achieved by addressing access and usage gaps. These include barriers such as affordability, skills development and engendered and cultural norms. The UN have listed specific objectives in the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) to bridge the digital divide and promote gender-responsive technology. Creating an integrated enabling environment will help achieve our key objectives.

This year marked the tenth anniversary of the United Nations’ ‘Girls in ICT Day,’ celebrating the empowerment and engagement of women and girls in technology. A decade on, we look at the
technical advancement, continued challenges and opportunities to improve inclusive engagement in the digital and ICT sectors.
