Scaling up and Scaling Out Networking, Observability, and Security with Cilium

Welcome to Cilium! In this session you'll get an update on how Cilium has been progressing as a project and how it is deployed in production. You'll hear how the project grew from a simple networking CNI to cover observability and security too. We will dive into the latest developments, like Tetragon and Cilium Service Mesh, and where the project is heading next. Trip.com will also discuss how they grew their Cilium managed clusters from hundreds of nodes to 3 thousand nodes in a matter of months. Finally, the audience will learn how to get involved in the project. Join us!

Just Buzz or Real Byte? eBPF in Cloud Native

The buzz around eBPF in cloud native is growing quickly but it can be scary to know where to start or how to keep up. In this talk, Bill will trace how he got into eBPF, explore some of the cloud native eBPF applications available today, and teach others how to dive into the hive of activity around eBPF without getting bytten.

People just beginning with eBPF will learn how eBPF makes it possible to have efficient networking, observability without instrumentation, effortless tracing, and real-time security (among other things) in a cloud native world. Those already familiar with eBPF will get an overview of the eBPF landscape and learn about many new and expanding eBPF applications that allow them to harness the power without needing to dive into the bytecode. The audience will walk away with an understanding of the buzz around eBPF in cloud native and knowledge of new tools that may solve some of their problems in networking, observability, and security.

A Practical Guide to eBPF Licensing: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the GPL

While there is a wide appreciation of the power of eBPF as used across the CNCF project landscape, there are some misconceptions in the ecosystem about when eBPF programs need to be licensed under the GPL and how that impacts licensing compliance. eBPF is a unique technology inside the cloud native landscape, making it possible for projects, like Cilium, Falco, and Pixie, to extend Linux kernel functionality from userspace.

Seeing GPL licensed code may give some licensing compliance teams pause because eBPF is unfamiliar to them - but it shouldn’t. This talk provides context around why the GPL licensed eBPF code exists and isn't a licensing hazard for the rest of the project.

If you are a contributor to a project already using eBPF or looking to add it, or you're unfamiliar with why eBPF licensing is so exceptional, come to this session and learn some practical strategies for eBPF licensing and you’ll hopefully learn to stop worrying and love the GPL.
