Boxi Wu is a PhD researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII), supported by the Grand Union Doctoral Training Partnership and the Balliol College Dervorguilla Scholarship. Their research focuses on the geopolitics of AI, considering how geopolitical imagination, narratives and discourses of AI are localised and intimately felt, through local resistance to AI infrastructure. At the OII, Boxi co-convenes the Oxford Digital Ethnography (OxDEG) Group and was awarded the 2024 MSc Thesis Prize for their research “Frictions in the Cloud: An Ethnographic Case Study of Local Data Centre Contestation in the UK”. Boxi is a member of the Oxford-Aalto University Digital Economic Security Lab (DIESL) and has worked as a Researcher on the Political Geography of AI Infrastructure project which aimed to map the political geography of AI infrastructure including data centres and GPUs. They are currently co-editing a Handbook for a Research Agenda for Critical AI with Edward Elgar Publishing.
