The AI Efficiency Nobody Is Measuring
Businesses are investing heavily in AI to make individuals more productive. But software is built by teams, and I’ve started to wonder whether we’re overlooking another kind of AI efficiency: what it could help us do for the people we work with. Over the last two years, I've experimented with generative AI in real product and engineering teams - supporting career development, recognising overlooked contributions, making team budgets work harder and creating experiences I simply wouldn't have had time to design before. Some worked brilliantly... others really didn't!
At the same time, as AI becomes associated with doing more with fewer people, trust can suffer. People are asking for more connection, recognition and a sense of being valued. I’ll share what worked, what went wrong, and practical ways to use AI for recognition, development and team connection while knowing when human judgement still matters. If AI helps us get the work done, perhaps we can use some of what it gives us back to make work better too.
AI is my new best friend
I’m a product manager with a fast brain and a mouth that sometimes outruns my thinking. I love big ideas but lose patience with long documents, formal processes and carefully worded emails.
Right now I’m delivering a major migration project with a client 11 hours ahead, teams spread across continents and a consulting partner coordinating everything. It’s busy and often chaotic.
I avoided AI for a long time. I didn’t trust it, didn’t know how to begin and worried it might replace me. But after finally trying ChatGPT two years ago, it quickly became part of how I work.
AI now helps me organise my thoughts, tidy up my words, ease stress and get started on the tasks I’d usually avoid. I’ve used it to plan workshops, design away days, invent silly team games and even stay on top of life admin. It helps me show up as a better PM, a better teammate and occasionally a better human.
