Dave currently the Application and Data Administration Lead for Nexus Pharmaceuticals. Prior to that he was the Manager of the DBA team at Stericycle. Dave was a Friend of Red-Gate for 2019 and 2020. He is a frequent presenter at SQL Saturday events and user groups around the country. Has been teaching SQL Server since version 2000 and is the SQL Server instructor at Harper College in Palatine, IL.

Securing an Azure SQL Database

Protecting the data is one of the prime responsibilities of the DBA. During this session we will cover some of the features of Azure and Azure SQL Database that will help make our data more secure. These features include Transparent Data Encryption, Always Encrypted and Data Masking.

In this session you will learn how to perform a complete performance assessment on a SQL Server using SSMS and SSRS. We will complete this using a suite of over 140 SSRS reports that includes easy navigation to all report. We will also go over how to create an effective monitoring solution using SSRS, SSM and Powershell. This solution also includes reports that have charts that will make it easy to share with non-technical individuals if needed. Using these reports you will be able to easily identify performance bottlenecks, potential security issues as well as aspects of your server that may not be in line with best practices.

DBA Guide to Surviving an Audit

For many of us, audit time is not only a necessity but can also be a source of a great deal of stress. Since many of us are extremely busy, knowing how to prepare for and survive an audit is essential. This session will cover some of the daily tasks that can help successfully prepare and pass an Audit. Auditors will ask for evidence and we will cover the typical evidence you may be asked to prepare as well how to prepare it. One of the worst case scenarios is when someone says something that prompts the auditors to dig deeper. We will also discuss how to communicate with the auditors.

Introduction to Azure Data Studio

This session will provide a high level overview of Azure Data Studio and highlight some of the differences from SQL Server Management Studio. We will cover the basics of Notebooks as well as additional functionality that is both native to Azure Data Studio and common extensions.

Data Types - What do I need to know about them

This is a 100 level sessions intended for the folks that are just starting their career as a data professional working with SQL Server. In the session we will go over the common data types and limitations associated with each of them. We will review how to determine the most appropriate data type to use in common situations. This sessions will not only cover the basic of a number of data types, but also review data type precedence, auto type conversions and the performance implications of data types.
