Advocacy Through Education: Bridging the gap of Human-Dog Coexistence in University Settings

Human-dog interactions have become an increasingly significant issue in urban and institutional spaces across India, often resulting from rising dog bite incidents due to policy paralysis, inadequate awareness, and concerns related to public health and safety. Universities, as centers of learning and social transformation, are crucial junctures that aim to provide a unique opportunity to initiate a dialogue and instill a compassionate and evidence-based approach toward community animals for peaceful coexistence.

By using a case study approach, the research evaluates the impact of awareness initiatives, stakeholder engagement, and animal welfare campaigns and interventions aimed at improving attitudes toward community dogs at Himachal Pradesh University.

The study infers the principles of humane education, social learning, and coexistence theory to analyze how educational programs can serve as an engine of policy creations and influence perceptions and behaviors among students, faculty, and staff. The paper argues that education-based advocacy offers a sustainable and conducive framework for peaceful coexistence in university settings. Finally, the proposal concludes by offering policy recommendations for peaceful coexistence.
