Deirdre Hon, M.Ed., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at the University of Portland. She received her M.Ed. from Harvard Graduate School of Education and her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University. She teaches courses in Developmental Psychology and Research Methods and is the director of UP’s Specialty in SEL. Her research focuses on exploring the process through which teachers learn to implement high-quality, culturally responsive SEL and cultivate their own social and emotional skills. She is involved in multiple statewide projects related to SEL in Oregon including leading the Oregon Collaborative for SEL in Educator Prep (OCSEP). Her background as a middle and high school teacher make her especially passionate about how schools can support the social and emotional development of adolescents.
Cultivating an Ecosystem of Transformative SEL in Oregon from Policy to Practice
In this session, participants will have the opportunity to hear from some of Oregon’s SEL leaders about successes, challenges, and learnings they encountered while working to develop aligned state-level Transformative SEL student standards and Educator Preparation Program (EPP) SEL standards, and initial implementation strategies in Oregon.
Cultivating SEL-Ready Teachers: Exploring the Impact of SEL-specific Courses on Pre-service Teachers
This session will outline findings from a two year, mixed method study of the impact of an SEL specialty endorsement for undergraduate pre-service teachers during their teacher preparation program. Results indicate that students who took the SEL-specific courses made gains in culturally responsive teaching practices as well as multiple personal social and emotional competencies.
