What Happens If Your Best People Leave? Succession Planning That Keeps Leaders Ready and Retained.”

Most succession plans live on a spreadsheet until someone resigns. Then HR scrambles, the team absorbs the gap, and the next leader steps in underprepared. The plan fails because it measures the wrong thing. It identifies who performs well today, not who is ready to lead tomorrow.
This session gives senior HR leaders a practical approach to building a leadership bench that develops people before the seat opens. Participants will explore:

The performance trap. Why promoting top performers without preparation drives early leader failure and turnover, and the observable differences between high performance and true leadership readiness.

The S.E.E.A.T.™ readiness lens. A five-part way to evaluate succession candidates beyond results: Self-Awareness, Emotional Intelligence, Education, Accountability, and Transformation. Participants get specific questions and behaviors to look for in each area, for use in talent reviews and calibration conversations.

The readiness map. Participants choose one critical role in their own organization and place potential successors into three groups: ready now, ready in 12 to 18 months, and not yet. Then they identify the single biggest development gap for each person.
A real-world example. How a multi-unit restaurant group with 26 locations built Aspire, a leadership development program for senior managers. More than 45 participants went through it, 88% were promoted within three to six months, and leaders moved into executive chef, assistant general manager, and general manager roles during a period of fast growth.
Making the case to executives. How to position leadership development as a retention and continuity strategy, using language that resonates with senior leaders and finance partners, instead of treating it as a training expense.

Participants leave with a completed readiness map for one critical role and a framework they can bring to their next talent review.
