Reducing climate impact of inhaled anesthetics by tenfold
Inhaled anesthetics contribute significantly to healthcare association emissions and pollution. Implementation of evidence-based practices to mitigate anesthesia greenhouse gas emissions reduced these emissions tenfold, with no negative effects on patient experience, safety or efficacy; however, these practice changes did result in cost savings. This session will focus on practical methods for affecting a reduction in anesthesia emissions using the example of Project SPRUCE Forest (Saving our Planet by Reducing Carbon Emissions), an international consortium of pediatric anesthesia groups implementing education and socialization, practice constraints, and direct data feedback to clinicians. We will engage participants by inviting participation in live demonstrations of evaluating emissions data in a software solution by modeling emissions minute-by-minute over example anesthetics. Participants will be invited to share their experiences within small groups and brainstorm how they could implement strategies at their home institutions.
