Professors are People Too: The Importance of Connecting Students with Faculty Beyond the Classroom

Professors can often seem unapproachable and intimidating to new students. This session will discuss how the incorporation of faculty within orientation and first-year seminars can minimize the barriers to interaction among faculty and students. We will detail the recruitment, training, and retention of seminar instructors and articulate methods for illuminating the benefits associated with engaging with faculty informally.

Earn to Return: The Importance of Accountability in Orientation Leader Development

Serving as an orientation leader is a privilege sought out by many upper-division students. How can practitioners ensure that the students they select take the role and its responsibilities seriously? Where is the balance between having a good time and being an intentional part of the mission of supporting new students? In this presentation we will discuss one model for selecting, training, and evaluating student leaders who take part in both orientation and a semester-long first-year seminar.
