Erwin offers more than 20 years of experience working in the IBM i community, as an IBM employee and now with Zend by Perforce. He has worked with many technologies on the POWER platform including cloud (PowerVC), Dev/Ops solutions (Docker and Chef), and open source technologies (Linux, MySQL/MariaDB, and PHP). Erwin is a frequent speaker at various user groups and technology conferences and has authored numerous articles on Linux, PHP, virtualization, and systems management.

Understanding and Managing the PHP Environment on IBM i

PHP on IBM i can be provided either through Zend Server or community PHP. While PHP has been available on the platform since 2006 you may not be familiar with how PHP runs on the platform and the tools that are provided for managing the environment. In this session, we will explore the structure of how the PHP engine runs on the i platform including a description of the subsystems employed and some basic troubleshooting. We will also take a look at the 5250-based management system (zsmenu) for managing the configuration files, jobs, and subsystems, as well as the Zend Server Web GUI for working with various features of the basic edition of Zend Server including server configuration management, monitoring, and root cause analysis. This session will also explore how to install and manage community PHP on the platform.

IBM i - The Other Open Source Platform

With IBM's adoption of the RPM/YUM ecosystem the IBM i midrange platform has become an attractive platform for open source solutions. This session will provide a brief overview of the IBM i platform and then dive into the open source solutions available on the platform, how customer's can benefit from OSS on the platform, and how solution providers can leverage this new platform in the Open Source space.

PHP and Database Access

As the "glue" that holds the LAMP stack together, PHP is used both as a language to represent the business logic of a web application as well as leveraging data from various data sources including relational databases. This session will start out with a look at the basic database access and manipulation functions provided by PHP. From there we will explore the PHP language extensions for accessing and working with data resident in DB2 on IBM i. Additionally, we will take a look at how PHP access MySQL/MariaDB data and how that data can actually be stored in DB2 without any code changes. Finally, we will take a look at how the PHP language can be used to build solutions from multiple disparate data sources – specifically in our case we will look at how data from DB2 and data from MariaDB can be represented together to deliver holistically (from a data perspective) solutions.

Community PHP- what does it mean to me

Community PHP has arrived on IBM i. You may be asking yourself how does this differ from the PHP delivered with Zend Server and why should I consider using it. In this session we will explore what community PHP is and just as importantly what it is not. Along the way we will talk about use cases for the community offering as well as when it makes sense to use Zend Server. We will contrast the similarities as well as the differences and even discuss how to migrate between the two PHP offering son the platform.

What can PHP do for your IBM i

This workshop will provide the attendee the opportunity to explore the PHP language and the types of solutions that can be implemented with PHP on IBM i. Specifically, this workshop will take a look at the ability to integrate ILE programs into PHP via the open-source toolkit, leverage the DB2 language extensions to bring DB2 data to the web, and use the open-source stack provided by PHP (and MariaDB) to implement LAMP-based solutions on IBM i. Come and explore what PHP can do for you.
