Phil Ewels is Product Manager for Open Source at Seqera. He holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Cambridge, UK.
Before joining Seqera in 2022, Phil worked at the National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI) at SciLifeLab in Stockholm, Sweden. He and his team focussed on developing and scaling up new lab protocols and bioinformatics solutions. This involved developing new analysis pipelines that could scale to very high volumes whilst adhering to high standards of reproducibility and reusability. It was through this work that Phil became involved in the Nextflow project and eventually co-founded the nf-core community.
Phil’s career has spanned many disciplines from lab work and bioinformatics research in epigenetics, through to software development and community engagement. He is passionate about open-source software and has a soft spot for tools with a focus on user-friendliness. He is the author of MultiQC, SRA-Explorer, QCFail.com, and several other pet projects.

Updates from the nf-core ecosystem
Join us for an exciting talk by Phil Ewels, co-founder of nf-core, presenting the latest updates from this collaborative initiative that develops high-quality, reusable bioinformatics pipelines built using Nextflow. The project has blossomed into a vibrant community, bringing together developers, bioinformaticians, and researchers from around the globe. This talk will offer a comprehensive catch-up on recent advancements, new pipeline releases, and ongoing initiatives within the nf-core ecosystem. Phil will also share insights on how you can contribute to and benefit from this thriving community, making it a must-attend event for anyone passionate about bioinformatics and open science.
MultiQC: New features and flexible data parsing
This talk will introduce the latest features in MultiQC, designed to further streamline data reporting and visualisation in bioinformatics workflows. Alongside these updates, we’ll explore different approaches running for MultiQC: default CLI functionality, custom content files, writing custom plugins and using MultiQC as a library within Python scripts.
We'll show how to use this newly announced scripting ability to tweak how parsed data is processed: filtering results, adding additional columns to tables, and generating custom plots. These additions provide even greater flexibility in tailoring MultiQC to specific project needs.
