Fernando is an AI innovator and tech strategist with a passion for applying cutting-edge research to real-world challenges in health, veterinary science, and smart systems. With over a decade of experience in deep learning, computer vision, and software engineering, he bridges the gap between science and scalable products that drive tangible impact.

He is currently the Director of Next Generation Technologies at Mars Inc., where he leads a cross-functional team to deliver AI-powered diagnostic tools for veterinary health. His work includes breakthrough products like PennHIP AI, DentalNet, and ToothScan, used across thousands of clinics worldwide. These tools have not only reduced radiologist time by up to 50 hours/month but have also created multi-million-dollar efficiency and revenue gains.

Previously, Fernando held roles as a Senior AI Manager and Global AI Engineer at Mars, and as an AI Technical Solutions Engineer at Intel. There, he optimized real-time inference for edge devices using Intel® OpenVINO and built scalable pipelines leveraging CPUs and HPC techniques. He also contributed to autonomous robotics research during his time at Johns Hopkins and developed ICU-focused deep learning tools to enhance medical imaging analysis.

Fernando holds dual degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and was a visiting researcher at the Johns Hopkings University. He has published in peer-reviewed venues, holds multiple patents, and was chosen to represent Mars at the 2024 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany.

His research and engineering interests span machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and applied AI for diagnostics and automation—especially when they unlock value for healthcare, animal welfare, and global operations. He is a strong believer in building tools that not only solve today’s problems but also anticipate tomorrow’s needs.
