Working with the other guy

When I went freelance, the opinion of outsource development came as a shock to me. As someone who has spent the last 20 years working at director levels in various sized organisations I thought that outsourcing was a solved problem.

As I moved into the world of Fractional CTO, helping startups on the initial steps in their tech journey, a common thread emerged - they are all using outsource wrong. From a belief that outsourcing is bad and building internal teams too complicated for an organisation to handle, to bad outsourcing that threatens the progress of the business - in/out sourcing decisions are damaging great businesses.

I talk with these founders. I help them repair the choices.

But I need your help. We need to start viewing outsourcing as a tool in our chest. Something we are comfortable using. Something we are able to discuss with others.

In this talk I will go through a number of anonymised case studies, looking at what went right, what went wrong and how we can apply these lessons into our everyday work.

Creating a Culture of Kindness

We have so many elaborate frameworks for building teams and making connections that we can sometimes overlook the most basic tenets of human interaction.

In centering our working culture around kindness, we are creating trust, fostering cooperation and building the strong relationships our teams need to thrive.

Whilst this might seem intuitive, it's easily lost under the weight of complex methodologies and business pressures, or sidelined as the sole preserve of HR.

In this talk I explore what professional kindness looks like, and how we can elevate kindness as a robust tool for meaningful and productive relationships. I'll also be touching on the experiences that led me to recentre my work around this guiding principle.
