“From the Firehouse to the Darkest Fires Within: Confronting the Uncomfortable Truth of Suicide”

48183 die by suicide every year in the United States. That’s one person every eleven minutes.
My name is George Sokaris, and I served as a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Albany, New York, for 29 years.
My brother Jerry also was a firefigter. He took his own life just one year from retirement.
I have been actively involved with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, raising funds through numerous events, sharing my personal story, and working to shed light on a subject that has been kept in the dark and invisible for far too long.
Community involvement has always been an important part of my life. For nine years, I chaired the very large Greek Festival in Albany, New York, one of the city’s most celebrated cultural events.
I have had the privilege of working in both the public and private sectors, which has given me a unique perspective on how important topics like mental health and suicide prevention are viewed from different viewpoints. Prior to my service as a firefighter, I was the owner of a high-end electronics business, which continues to thrive today as Hippo’s Home Entertainment Center, established in 1988.
I am now retired and living in Trinity, Florida. I also frequently travel to Greece, the country of my father’s birth, where I enjoy the people, the food and the culture.
