My name is Gina Shirey. I live in Juneau, Alaska which is located in Lingit Aani. I was born in western Pennsylvania near the confluence of three rivers known today as Pittsburgh. This rich area was the home to many indigenous tribes beginning with the Adena and Hopewell cultures, also known as Mound Builders. Other indigenous peoples include the Osage in pre-contact time and in post-contact time, the Monongahela peoples, who were later joined by the Delaware, Shawnee, and Haudenosaunee. My maternal grandparents are Paul and Hazel Roenigk. My paternal grandparents William and Virginia Shirey. I live in Juneau with my blended family including my husband Mateo Britez, his daughter Laura, and my daughter Virginia. I've been at the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and in my position for almost 10 years. At DEC, I facilitate tribal engagement in the wastewater discharge permitting process.
