Grace Ying (she/her) is the Global Asias Postdoctoral Scholar in Taiwanese American Studies at the University of California, Irvine. Her research focuses on the migration experiences and media histories of first-generation Taiwanese Americans who arrived in the United States between the 1960s and 1970s. She examines how community newsletters and telephone answering-machine systems enabled migrants to build decentralized information networks that played a vital role in Taiwan’s democratization and helped shape Taiwanese American identity. She received her Ph.D. in Social Research and Cultural Studies from the Institute of Social Research and Cultural Studies at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan in 2026. Her research has been supported by the UC San Diego Center for Taiwan Studies and Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council.
