Demystifying Quality Attributes in the World of Data Science

Data Science - A world of data, data history which uses various algorithms, statistical approaches, tools and techniques to reveal what the data articulates, has changed the current software industry scenario.

Today the industry is more inclined towards the increased development of software systems having components that are more data-driven. Use of machine learning, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics is widespread.

There are set standards, protocols, process and methodologies to design, develop and manage any software-intensive system. In the phase of writing Software Architecture one such set standard which is referred is - Quality Model and the listed Quality Attributes. Quality Attributes plays a vital role in defining the Architectural Goals. It is helpful in specifying, measuring and evaluating the product quality of any software / software-intensive systems.

With the emerging Data Science trend, while working on Software Architecture for such data-driven software-intensive systems, there is a need to interpret existing Quality Attributes and its relevant applicability in the right context.

In this session we will look at:
• Quality Attributes / Characteristics that are relevant for systems that are more data-driven and developed with the use of ML, AI or PA concepts.

Software Architecture and Software Project Management - A Joint Venture for a Software Success

Software Architecture and Software Project Management both areas are very
close to my heart. Both have equivalent importance for the success of a software
project and product and they both have interconnecting goals too.

As an integral part of Software Architecture, goal would be to have a successful
design, it’s proper implementation and sustainability for a longer period of time.
As an integral part of Software Project Management, though the area of
operation would differ, goal would always be a successful completion and
delivery of the project / product.

Scope, Time and Quality remains a common factor to both of them. However,
Software Architecture goes beyond to just the completion of software
development. In ideal situation, Software Architect and Project Manager are 2 different roles which are good to have in a software firm. However often these roles are
merged with a new role namely Technical Manager / Solution Architect / Tech
Consultant.

With my personal experience of being a Manager and wearing a hat of Architect
(as and when required), writing design documents for the product and also
managing the team schedule, considering both the managerial as well as
technical aspects, I would like to share:
• How indirectly various important attributes of Software Architecture
were implemented.
• Challenges that come up when you play both roles.
• How important it is for an organization to have both as different roles?
Benefits and challenges associated with it.

In addition, with this session I will also talk about:
What are the aspects of both the areas which would jointly bring out what I
would like to call S3 - A Successful and Sustainable Software?

Software Architecture in Predictive Analytics Software

Today it is the world of Data Science. Ample amount of data is available which when utilized at right time in right manner can help to forecast as well as predict in advance any untimely failures/disasters that can cause serious and fatal losses. Out of many, one area where such predictions and Predictive Analytics Software can be of great use is, manufacturing/process industries like power plants, oil and natural gas and many such more.

Predictive Analytics Software not only has components like main stream software-intensive systems, but it also has statistical algorithms, tools, techniques, mathematical components for pattern recognition as well as other techniques like machine learning, artificial intelligence, modelling etc. It also has diverse stakeholders and other connected systems.

Software Architecture is well practiced in main stream software-intensive systems like web, embedded, enterprise applications etc. However, Predictive Analytics being emerging branch, there is a lot of scope for research and enhancement in Software Architecture concepts with respect to such software systems.

With my experience working with Predictive Analytics Software for power plants, in this paper I will talk about following 3 points:

1. Benefits of practicing Software Architecture in Predictive Analytics Software
2. Challenges in using Software Architecture in Predictive Analytics Software
3. Future ahead
