How we prepare for major events and increased traffic at NRK.no – both the ones we know about in advance and those that surprise us.
The talk will cover how we are rigged for handling major increase in traffic without outages. We will discuss both major events known in advance, e.g. the general election and Melodi Grand Prix (Norwegian branch of Eurovision Song Contest), but also sudden surges in traffic caused by unexpected news events. And how, despite our best efforts, we still stumble, using Melodi Grand Prix 2020 as an example.

Det siste året har interessen for NRK.no økt blant utenlandske stormakter. Selv om det er hyggelig å være populær kan det noen ganger bli litt for mye. I denne presentasjonen skal vi gå gjennom hvordan DDoS-angrep oppleves hos NRK.no og hvordan vi prøver å minske konsekvensene når angrepene skjer. Vi skal også se at ikke alle angrep er fiendtlige eller kommer utenifra.
Not all attacks are malicious: DDoS from outside and within
Over the past year, the interest in NRK.no has increased among foreign powers. Although it's nice to be popular, it can sometimes become a bit too much. In this presentation, we will go through how DDoS attacks are experienced at NRK.no and how we try to minimize the consequences when the attacks occur. We will also see that not all attacks are hostile or come from external sources.
