From Terraform to YAML: The Rise of Crossplane
Infrastructure as Code has historically been Terraform, but now there's a new player in town that aims to simplify resource provisioning. Crossplane combines IaC and GitOps, enabling YAML-based definitions for your entire infrastructure. In this session, we will explore what Crossplane is, how it works under the hood, and why it has become one of the fastest-growing CNCF projects. We'll examine its role in platform engineering, its integration with public cloud providers, and the problems it aims to solve compared with traditional IaC tools.
To demonstrate these concepts in practice, we will build and deploy a modern application comprising a React frontend, a Java backend, and an Oracle Database in a dynamically provisioned Crossplane environment. Using a blue-green deployment strategy, we'll demonstrate how to manage infrastructure and application delivery together to enable safe, gradual releases.
Platform Engineering for Java Developers in the AI era.
Besides its generative capabilities, AI is also a tool that blurs software lifecycle boundaries, shifting you toward self-service platforms. Dev and Ops emerge into platform engineering, powered by fast-consumable knowledge from AI assistants. Still, layering abstractions on top of abstractions raises many questions as complexity increases.
In this session, we'll explore how modern platform engineering changes the way Java applications are built, deployed, and operated. We'll look at the evolution from traditional DevOps practices to GitOps workflows, self-service environments, and developer experience as a first-class engineering concern.
Through real-world examples, we'll examine how platform teams abstract Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure, without taking absolute control away from developers. We'll discuss common platform engineering patterns, Java deployment optimizations, startup probes, JVM and container memory, Autoscaling myths, and debugging production issues.
Pulling Containers Without Kubernetes Secrets
This presentation explores a secure approach to pulling containers in both on-prem and cloud Kubernetes environments without relying on traditionally stored secrets in etcd. By leveraging Kubelet CredentialProvider, YubiKey as a secure key storage, and OAuth-compliant container registries, this session demonstrates how to implement a passwordless authentication mechanism for container pulls.
Attendees will learn how to replace imagePullSecrets with a credential provider that integrates seamlessly with Kubernetes worker nodes. This will ensure a secure, streamlined, and compliant container pull process from any Open Container Initiative-based registry. Through detailed technical explanations and practical examples in Go, this session will provide a deep dive into building and deploying a zero-password authentication workflow for Kubernetes environments, enhancing both security and operational efficiency.
Tips and Tricks to Secure Your Kubernetes Cluster
Securing Kubernetes clusters is a critical task for ensuring robust cloud-native application performance and safeguarding sensitive data. Still, security is a multidisciplinary domain that interferes with storage, networks, hardware, applications, etc. This session offers practical, hands-on guidance for implementing advanced security measures around Kubernetes. Drawing from real-world scenarios and demos, we will cover key strategies including Zero Trust principles for kubectl access, effective role-based access control (RBAC), and safeguarding secrets through mechanisms like Etcd encryption and the CSI Secrets Store Driver.
Attendees will gain actionable insights into addressing multi-tenant traffic isolation challenges, managing user identities with the least privilege, and integrating vault for external secrets. The presentation also explores network security enhancements for hub-spoke architectures and container image security using passwordless pulls from private registries.
Warp One, Engage: The Seek for Exoplanets
Join us on a thrilling warp-powered interstellar voyage as we seek exoplanets through the universe. Learn how scientists use technology to search for habitable exoplanets and what it has to do with the fairy tale Goldilocks. Find out how we build a warp drive to speed up the search with Kubernetes, GraalVM, Java, Python, and more. Examine warp-drive dynamics and understand how technology boosts the search. Participants will get insights into high-performance computing, cloud-native deployments, and astrophysics. I will showcase real-world exoplanet searches based on the recorded GAIA dataset, exploring new worlds beyond our solar system.
