James S. May, Ed.D. is a Professor of English for Academic Purposes at Valencia College with more than 25 years of experience teaching multilingual learners, leading faculty development initiatives, and exploring innovative approaches to teaching and learning. He was named Florida Professor of the Year by the Association of Florida Colleges and later recognized as Florida U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In 2024, he received the Association of Florida Colleges Innovation in Technology Award for his work integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and learning. James is a frequent presenter for the Bureau of Education & Research (BER), the Association of Florida Colleges, and other national and regional conferences. His current action research explores how thoughtfully designed AI-mediated learning experiences can make student thinking more visible while supporting engagement, critical thinking, language development, and responsible AI use.
