Jennifer has 20 years of experience as an elementary school counselor. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, National Certified Counselor, National Board Certified Teacher, and an ASCA Diversity and Inclusion Specialist. She led her school to become a district model for multi-tiered SEL implementation. She is passionate about building students’ SEL competencies using children’s books that promote racial literacy and racial justice. For adults, she and her co-presenters, LaCresha Henderson and Annery Sosa, have created an innovative book club that uses children’s books to expand educators’ social awareness related to race and racial justice. They have facilitated this adult book club, trained others to facilitate the book club, and presented their model at several conferences. Jennifer also facilitates adult learning as a certified Community Resiliency Model Teacher. She believes that building adults’ SEL competencies positively impacts students’ social-emotional wellness.

Mirrors & Windows: Building SEL Competencies in Educators Through Children’s Books

Mirrors & Windows Book Club is an innovative approach to adult learning that expands educators’ social awareness and cultural competence. Through diverse children’s books, educators engage in discussions and reflections about racial literacy and racial justice. Presenters will share implementation steps and results, and will also facilitate a brief book club experience for session participants.
