A wizards introduction to Semantic Link
Managing a Power BI environment can be frustrating.
Our database changes a name of a column, where is that used in our reports? Do I need to open them all? Who do I contact?
We know that bi-directional filtering is best not-done, but how do we know it is used? Can we find that?
Using Semantic link, a free python library we can use in Fabric Notebooks, even someone with little to no Python experience can save a lot of time finding answers to these questions.
Come and see how semantic link can help you out like it did for me.
The Yellow wizard will take you along on a managing tour of the Power BI environment of Middle Earth.
From The First (data) soldier to the last (report) stand - a Sabaton report all the way
It’s not 'a secret' that building a report from scratch can be a real 'dream destroyer', leaving us all hoping for a little 'Gott mit uns'.
But as 'The first soldier'/developer, the mission is clear — the report must be delivered, so we better get started.
First, we need data. The Sabaton website is a great starting point. Like true 'Swedish Pagans', we plunder the site for all the information we can find.
Of course, data is never clean when we first grab it, so we dive 'Into the fire' and start cleaning.
Once we’re 'Back in control', it’s time to search for more data to enrich our dataset.
While doing this, we follow what 'Sun Tzu Says':
"The art of Modelling is of vital importance to the Report. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to success or to ruin."
With the groundwork done, we charge in 'all guns blazing' to create solid DAX measures — and along the way, we’ll cover some best practices too.
Finally, with our 'Last dying breath', we piece together the report, which will proudly serve as our 'Coat of arms'.
Whether you’re learning the basics or searching for practical tips, fresh tricks, the 'Seven pillars of Wisdom', or just some good old best practices, you can join this session and become one of the PBI-'Stormtroopers'.
