Joaquin Trujillo is the Founder and CXO of Authenticity LLC, a (1) professional and management development training and (2) scientific and technical consulting firm. He is a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Operations Officer, holds a PhD in Sociology from Florida International University, and regularly coaches US military and Special Forces at the US Army Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) in leadership, team, interpretive, and high reliability processes integral to intelligence and psychological operations during large scale combat operations (LSCO). His methodological expertise, as evinced by his scientific publications, comprises phenomenology, cybernetics, existential-psychotherapy, ethnography, and heuristics. Dr. Trujillo’s scientific research labors to explicate human phenomena (thinking, intelligence, common sense, teams) in advanced technologies (AI, quantum mechanics, spaceflight, mining, high-risk systems) with particular focus on the development of machine common sense (MCS). His published AI research (5 peer-reviewed articles), including, most recently, “The DARPA Machine Common Sense (MCS) Program A Phenomenological Diagnosis of its Interpretational Challenges,” has yielded two axioms, (a) “machines do not exist” and (b) “a machine is intelligent if it contains the basic elements of a system,” and (c) one corollary, “the measure of a machine’s intelligence corresponds to the scope of its equifinality.”

Phenomenology and Machine Common Sense

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) Machine Common Sense (MCS) program is promoting efforts to “mimic” common sense in machines. Its overarching goal is to support the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) from its current narrow version toward an envisaged general one that simulates common sense. An issue it contends is impeding efforts is the challenge of articulating and encoding the phenomenon’s “obscure but pervasive nature.” This session, whose content has been published in the 2023 peer-reviewed article available at https://www.eudia.org/wp-content/uploads/Trujillo_Machine-Common-Sense.pdf, endeavors to clarify these alleged characteristics of common sense phenomenologically. It (1) introduces the DARPA MCS program, (2) reviews the cognitive psychology of common sense and highlights its strengths and weaknesses assessed against the prospect of machine common sense and phenomenologically; (3) lays out the phenomenology of common sense and, from those findings, (4) responds to the question of common-sense’s obscurity and pervasiveness.
