An Introduction to Serverless in Azure

Serverless computing has been on a rapid rise in recent years. The new Azure services reflect this, but what exactly is serverless and why would you want to adopt it?

In this introductory session we will investigate what serverless is and how it compares to the other options for running custom built applications in Azure.

Taking you through some of the many serverless offerings in Azure, such as static webapps, cosmos db and durable functions this session will address the features, benefits and potential pitfalls to avoid.

I have successfully implemented many serverless applications and hope after learning more about serverless you will want to as well.

Building Azure Static Web Apps

Over the last few years, Azure has expanded it’s serverless offerings including the introduction of Azure static web apps.

This hosting model provides lightweight, highly performant and scalable hosting that can be a great addition to your project but how do you get started and what options are available?

In this session, I will take you on a tour of Azure static web apps, look at why you would want to move existing applications and look at the JAM Stack that can be used to maximize the benefits of the platform.

An Introduction to Serverless SignalR with Azure Functions

Serverless computing has been on a rapid rise in recent years and many services are popularised. One of the lesser-known services is Azure SignalR Serverless which can be used with Azure Functions.

Amongst other things, SignalR can push or broadcast information from a back-end function at any time to any front-end web application that has subscribed. This allows for real-time updates of data on websites, multiplayer games, polls, interactive chatbots and various other uses.

In this introductory session, we run through the theory and possible uses of SignalR before looking at how to create a simple application using Serverless SignalR with Azure Functions. Finally, we will finish by comparing it to Azure Web PubSub and seeing why you would select one over the other.

Device Code OAuth Flow for IoT

OAuth is something all of us have experienced as we use the modern web and something many of us had to tackle as developers. There are many flows and in this ambitious lightning talk we take a brief look at these, introducing the relatively unknown flow; Device Code Flow showing how it fills a gap created by the rise of IoT.

Breaking up Monolithic websites with Azure

Many organizations have monolithic website applications on legacy systems. While there have been many discussions on how to break your backend application into a microservice architecture, breaking up the front end can be a different challenge.

Using Azure front door and related Azure services this challenge can be tackled in manageable pieces while still allowing customers to view a seamless single website.

In this session, I will show you a range of approaches and look at the Azure front door features that help with this task. We will also address some of the challenges that need to be overcome when splitting up a monolithic front-end web application.

By sharing my experience I hope to show that splitting up monolithic websites can lead to improved performance, better scalability, and assist with moving to modern architecture.
