Connecting Farms and Growing Plants with Nomad and Consul

Bowery Farming is building a worldwide network of indoor farms. Bowery has a proprietary software system called "BoweryOS", our distributed operating system which is responsible for running and monitoring our highly-automated farms. We need to be able to deploy services that can run in the cloud or on-premise at our farms, and ensure these services are highly available and can connect to each other. Hashicorp's Nomad and Consul products were a perfect fit for this use case - they give our software development and SRE teams the ability to use a single set of tools and APIs across our cloud and on-premise hybrid infrastructure. Our SREs use Packer and Terraform to provision VMs in the cloud in the same way that they do for our on-premise servers. In this talk, you'll learn about how Bowery's unique business model required us to use cloud/on-premise hybrid products like Nomad and Consul, and how we use them to grow the freshest, healthiest produce for local communities.
