Jose also spearheaded the creation of BQ AI in 2023. This ambitious project aims to develop a super-intelligence focused on the global economy, starting with the U.S. It integrates data at the atomic level, modeling interactions across companies, consumers, households, governments, and events to merge micro and macroeconomic perspectives.
Under his guidance, BQ AI is part of three major NSF-funded projects, including a notable initiative titled "AI-Ready Data Products to Facilitate Discovery and Use." This project is designed to assist in the development of a future National Secure Data Service (NSDS) that could enhance the utility of statistical data products for AI applications, potentially revolutionizing how federal agencies and their partners use generative AI.
Prior to his entrepreneurial ventures, Jose was a co-founder and senior advisor at Powerlytics, where he played a crucial role in offering anonymized IRS tax data for U.S. entities. His academic journey included prestigious positions such as the Faculty and Executive Director at UCLA Anderson School of Management's Fink Center, and he has published extensively in various peer-reviewed journals.
He also held significant roles at UC Berkeley as an Adjunct Accounting Professor and as the Executive Director of the Center for Financial Reporting & Management. There, he founded the Berkeley Charter of Professional Accountancy (BCPA) and received the 2015 Notable Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award.
Before his tenure at UC Berkeley, Jose was an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Temple University's Fox School of Business and an Assistant Professor of Economics at SUNY Buffalo, where he contributed to the founding of the Journal of Human Capital.
