FeltHappiness - Where Felted Wool meets the Sea through Cyanotype

Since moving to Ireland in 2022, Juliane Gorman has been deeply inspired by the landscape and by the abundance of sheep that dot the Irish countryside. She was surprised to discover that their wool is no longer widely valued and is often treated as waste. This tension between a rich natural resource and its present underuse has become central to her creative practice.

In 2025, she began working more intentionally with Irish wool, exploring its textures and potential while reconnecting with a material that is both local and forgotten.

Drawn always to colour and to the shoreline, she began combining cyanotype printing with felting. Using seaweed foraged above the tideline, she creates sun-printed images on silk, which are then integrated into wool.

Through this process, Juliane transforms two undervalued natural materials, wool and seaweed, into works that celebrate the beauty of Ireland’s coast and countryside.
