Kara went from tutus to tech. After pursuing a career as a professional ballerina, Kara returned to her hometown of Nashville, TN to work as a music publicist. A life of pitching journalists and red carpets left her feeling unfulfilled and she made the switch to being a software engineer. Now, Kara has a passion for introducing others to this industry and showing them they can succeed.

Outside of work, Kara enjoys playing with her two dogs - Maggie and Franklin, going to concerts and seeing a ballet whenever she can.

CSS For All Of Us

Does hearing the phrase CSS fill you with absolute joy or does it make you run and hide? CSS can be really confusing but let's have you confident in your skills the next time you're asked to style your app or website. In this talk we'll break down the intricacies of CSS so everyone can understand. We'll talk about specificity, how browsers render CSS, some of my favorite cheats and also the advantages/disadvantages of using a CSS framework.

A Guide to Perfecting Pull Requests

Writing clean and readable code is only half of the battle as a software engineer. The next step to overcome is the pull request. Now that we're living in an asynchronous world, it's more important than ever to concisely communicate what changes you're making and why. In this talk, we'll discuss what makes a good pull request including the title, the size of the PR and ways to make reviewing your pull request a fun time.

Getting Off the Ground with CSS Grid

When it comes to building responsive web layouts we’ve used tables, floats and Flexbox. Now there’s CSS Grid. In this talk, we’ll go over what differentiates it from other techniques and why it’s completely changing the game. Through code examples and demos, you’ll walk out of this talk able to start using Grid right away.

From Tutus To Tech: Lessons Learned from Changing Careers

What do ballet, music publicity and front end engineering have in common? More than you would think. Five years ago I didn’t know what a div was but I did know I needed a career change. I stumbled upon the tech world, enrolled in a bootcamp and haven’t looked back.

Non-traditional paths are becoming more common place in the tech industry. There are more bootcamp and self-taught devs than ever before. In this talk, we’ll discuss what it was like for me to transition to tech from not one, but two completely unrelated careers, how I bring my past experiences into my current role and why you should consider hiring more devs with non-traditional backgrounds.
