GitHub Actions for the Modern Data Engineer
As Microsoft shifts its CI/CD vision towards GitHub, it's time for Data Engineers to take note. Gone are the days where Azure DevOps was the default choice — GitHub Actions is now the beating heart of Microsoft’s DevOps strategy.
In this session, we’ll explore how Data Engineers can harness GitHub Actions to streamline deployments across both code (like SQL and Python) and infrastructure (like Bicep and ARM templates). You'll learn how GitHub’s native CI/CD platform compares to Azure DevOps: What’s familiar (Git, YAML), what’s different (secret handling, approval gates), and where GitHub Actions really shines.
Whether you build pipelines for data platforms or orchestrate infrastructure with code, this talk will equip you with a practical foundation and inspire you to bring modern DevOps practices into your data projects.
DAX Querying for SQL Connaisseurs
In this session we will dive into writing your own DAX queries. Whenever you interact with visuals, filters or slicers within Power BI, in the background EVALUATE queries are sent to the data model. When debugging, it might come in handy to write (or at least alter) these queries yourself.
But how do you write these by yourself?
In this session we expect you to know your SQL, and we will compare the two languages. After laying a firm foundation in writing queries yourself, we'll head for the depths and see what happens behind the underwater.
Azure DevOps for Data Engineers: the Git way
If you want to setup Azure DevOps the way that works best with Git, what would it be?
Usually, "One repository per independently deployable product" is stated. What is one product? As Data Platform people, many of us are used to thinking of our (former?) Data Warehouse as a black box. But that's not what meant here!
We'll take inspiration from our software development peers and look how to break up our data platform projects in multiple smaller repositories and accompanying pipelines.
We'll look into the practice of breaking up your data project into multiple small repositories and accompanying pipelines. How does that work with schema changes? And how do we orchestrate everything in a neat way? Are there other best practices to keep in mind?
