Dark Information: The Real Enemy of This Conference
We keep feeding more data into increasingly capable machines and expecting uncertainty to disappear. Instead, teams somehow end up with overloaded dashboards, friendly fights, and piles of meetings.
A big part of the problem is Dark Information: everything that gets lost when messy reality is compressed into something a computer can digest. Intentions, local context, tribal knowledge, changing goals, and the occasional gossip all sit outside the motherboard. This creates an important boundary for automation. Computers are exceptional at complicated tasks with measurable rules, but human work constantly drifts into complex territory, where actors react unpredictably to one another and meanings change along the way.
Most AI conversations describe this unevenness as jagged intelligence: a broadly capable system with strengths and weaknesses scattered around its edges. Drawing from ideas developed in Krešimir Končić’s new book Coding Is the Easier Part, this lightning talk argues that the terrain may be far more speckled. Instead of one steadily expanding general intelligence, we may be looking at scattered pockets of remarkable machine performance surrounded by much messier territory. Territory that still sits beyond computers’ reach.
For companies chasing AI adoption, this changes the question. Stop asking which jobs can be automated. Start looking for the individual speckles inside the work, then give the people closest to those tasks enough room to experiment and discover where automation actually works.
What happens after that is where the automation story gets considerably stranger.
