Leiana Talo Lepule (She, Her) is Samoan and Filipina American from Chula Vista in the Kumeyaay/Kumiais territory of California. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies in May 2021 from San Diego State University (SDSU) and continues her education in SDSU’s Preliminary Multiple-Subject Teaching Credential Program. Lepule has assumed the following roles in empowering the Asian American communities and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities: SDSU’s Pacific Islander Student Association’s Vice President, President, and Advisor (2018-Present); Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy and Leadership’s Statewide Pacific Islander Asian American Resource and Coordinating Center Fellow (2019); Empowering Pacific Islander Communities’ Pacific Islander Leaders of Tomorrow Cohort 12 Member (2019); Hawai’i International Conference on Education researcher and presenter (2020); Diversify Our Narrative Curriculum Developer (2022). She is currently working in Girls Leadership’s AAPI Research Council to conduct a national study on the leadership experiences of Asian and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander American girls, young women, and gender-expansive youth. As an incoming educator and forever learner, Lepule is striving to expand the curriculum of elementary education to include more extensive narratives of Asian and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities. The ever-changing nature of the acronym AAPI sheds light on the rapidly growing movement and importance for recognizing the individuality and uniqueness of each community through receiving an education. Lepule brings her own experiences as a Samoan and Filipina woman in higher education into the spaces she is grateful to be invited to in order to continue the work of her parents, Jonathan and Elena Lepule, in empowering the Asian and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities. Through education, advocacy, and leadership, Lepule strives to uplift her communities in hopes of giving future generations of leaders the opportunities and knowledge they need to continue the mission of creating change for our communities.
