Commanding Accessibility: Designing CLI Programs for Inclusivity
Many Command Line Interface (CLI) programs unintentionally exclude users with disabilities due to overlooked accessibility features. This talk highlights the importance of prioritising accessibility in CLI design. We’ll explore considerations, such as integrating auditory cues, designing inclusive colour schemes, and ensuring compatibility with assistive technologies. By focusing on creating readable and navigable outputs, developers can build programs that are not just functional but truly inclusive, enabling everyone to interact effectively.
I will need the ability to play sound. This would be the first time delivering this talk. I will also be calling on volunteers from the audience.
The ugly truth about BigO
If you think BigO notation is the be-all and end-all of algorithm analysis, think again! We'll expose the limitations and drawbacks of BigO notation. From the disconnect between BigO notation and real-world performance to its potential to lead to suboptimal system design, we'll pull back the curtain on the dark side of BigO notation.
How to use SELINUX (no I don't mean turn it off)
Why do we turn off NSA-grade security features? Well, early on, SELinux was complex and confusing. However, the pains of dealing with SELinux are long gone. In fact, the tools for working with SELinux have long improved and are now so easy anyone can configure the security layer. Even one chmod can you leave you vulnerable. With SELinux is running, a rogue process will be prevented from running amok. Instead of turning this off, learn how to improve your security and keep your application (and containers) safe.
This will be an intermediate-level course. I will be running a demo that will include some docker/k8s
Why the Technical Interview Is Broken and How to Fix it
We've all been there; the dreaded technical interview. The interviewer lords over your shoulder, watching you type every character. You can feel your anxiety flaring up every minute that passes. But what can be done to improve the situation? In this session, I'll share insights about working as an interviewer and practical tips and techniques that I look for in a candidate.
