Marina Aina (she/hers) is a Samoan, Black, and White woman who is currently a senior about to graduate from Pomona College this spring with her Bachelor’s Degree in American Studies. Her thesis within American Studies seeks to interrogate the connections between militarization, health, and food for American Samoans. Although born on Tovangaar lands (Los Angeles), she grew up on Cahuilla and Luiseño lands (Menifee, CA). On campus, this is her third year as an intern for her school’s Asian American Resource Center (AARC). This year, she is also a committee member for her school Tongan outreach program STEP –– Saturday Tongan Education Program –– which seeks to academically support and build community and cultural knowledge for the local Tongan and other Pasifika youth in the Inland Empire. She is also working this year with other Pasifika members of AARC to establish a Pasifika Student Association (PSA) at her college consortium. While she is still figuring out her post-graduate plans, she knows it will be grounded in education access and/or health equity for Pasifika peoples.
