Mark Adams is the founder and president of California Receivership Group (CRG), a company that has been revitalizing distressed properties for over 25 years. With a deep commitment to transforming unsafe and neglected buildings, he and his team have rehabilitated 415 properties across California, Tennessee, and Texas, overseeing $62.5 million in rehab loans, all repaid. His work has had a profound economic impact, creating approximately 1,500 jobs and improving communities by restoring properties that were once considered liabilities.

CRG specializes in receivership, a legal process that allows courts to take control of distressed properties to address critical safety concerns, code violations, and neglect. Adams has utilized this legal tool to tackle various challenging property issues, including fire damage, hoarding, abandoned homes, and contamination from hazardous materials. Through receivership, he and his team can secure, clean up, and rehabilitate these properties, returning them to productive use. This process offers a more timely and effective solution for properties that traditional property management approaches have struggled to address.

Adams’s success in California prompted him to expand CRG’s services to other states. In 2019, he launched Texas Receivership Group (TxRG) and Tennessee Receivership Group (TRG), extending the firm’s reach to new communities in need. TxRG has secured two appointments in Dallas, while TRG recently completed its 36th property in Memphis. These expansions reflect his determination to share his expertise with other cities, helping them solve their property problems and restore neighborhoods.

Beyond his work with CRG, Adams has been a driving force in advancing the receivership industry. As a co-founder of the Vacant Property Receivership Consortium (VPRC), a nonprofit organization, he has helped promote receivership as an effective tool for revitalizing vacant and distressed properties. Through VPRC, he has raised awareness about the importance of receivership and advocated for policies that support its use. He has also been a sought-after speaker at various industry conferences, such as the Receivership Roundtable and the Center for Community Progress National Land Bank Network Summit, where he has shared his knowledge with other professionals.

Receiver Mark Adams’ expertise in receivership also gained attention following the 2020 Los Angeles wildfires. After the disaster, he was invited to write an article for Receivership News, a publication of the California Receivers Forum. His article discussed how receivership can be essential in recovering fire-damaged properties. He emphasized the importance of receivership in securing these properties, preventing further damage, and initiating rehabilitation, allowing communities to recover more quickly and safely.

Adams’ journey in the receivership field began in 1999 when he became the first court-appointed receiver under California’s Health and Safety Code. His first case involved remediating unsafe conditions at a 66-unit apartment complex, marking the start of his long and successful career. Since then, he has worked on various properties, including residential buildings, hotels, and commercial spaces, always restoring them to safe, livable conditions.

Adams has earned several prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Entrepreneurial Alumnus Award from Loyola Marymount University. His leadership in the receivership industry and commitment to improving communities have made him a respected figure.

Mark Adams’ work continues to shape the future of receivership and property revitalization. His dedication to transforming distressed properties into valuable community assets has impacted the neighborhoods he serves. As he continues to expand CRG’s reach and advocate for receivership, he remains committed to helping communities overcome the challenges of distressed properties and improve the quality of life for residents.
