Mark Lawson is Director of Technology for Technologists of Color, where he helps design and lead technology initiatives, workforce programs, applied AI experiences, and community-based programming for Black technologists, entrepreneurs, and emerging technology professionals.

Building Under Pressure with AI Tools: Lessons from Competing on a Coding Reality Show
What happens when a six-week coding competition forces two experienced technologists to move from pitch through product launch, using AI tools to build at a pace that would have been hard to imagine only a few years ago?
As contestants on CodeTV’s The Full Stack, we had the opportunity to find out.
Competing together as the 404 Arc-itects, we experienced software development in a highly compressed environment where we had to understand the problem, shape the product, make architecture decisions, build, test, adjust, and present a working solution in a fraction of the time those activities traditionally take.
AI made that speed possible. It did not make the decisions for us.
Between us, we brought years of experience building software, architecting systems, managing teams, leading technology work, and creating products for real users. The competition became a practical test of which software-development lessons still matter in an AI-assisted world, which ones matter even more, and what changes when the cost and speed of implementation shift dramatically.
The fundamentals held up. You still have to understand the problem before you build. You still have to control scope. You still have to make tradeoffs. You still have to understand the user, recognize when an approach is failing, pivot quickly, communicate clearly, and know what "good enough" means for the stage you are in.
What changed was the speed at which all of those decisions had to be made.
AI can help teams prototype, code, troubleshoot, explore alternatives, and move from idea to working software dramatically faster. But that same speed can also create bad architecture faster, expand scope faster, generate technical debt faster, and send a team confidently in the wrong direction.
We’ll use stories, behind-the-scenes insights, and specific moments from The Full Stack to show where these lessons became obvious in practice. The show gave us a real environment to test what experienced software judgment looks like when AI dramatically accelerates execution.
Attendees will leave with practical lessons on how to:
* Use AI to increase development speed without giving up control of the product.
* Separate decisions that AI can accelerate from decisions that still require human judgment.
* Recognize when AI is helping and when it is creating more work, confusion, or technical debt.
* Define the problem and control scope before faster development turns into faster overbuilding.
* Make architecture and product decisions when implementation is no longer the slowest part of the process.
* Pivot quickly when feedback shows that the current approach is not working.
* Protect the user experience while moving at AI-assisted speed.

The competition compressed the software lifecycle. AI compressed the work inside it. The result was a clear reminder that faster tools do not eliminate the need for experience, product thinking, architecture, teamwork, and judgment. They make those things more important.
